AN ALPINE
CLASSIC

A historic place with elegant slopes, snow-capped
mountains and the most luxurious ski resorts.
Photographed on 35mm film in Lech.

Lech am Arlberg—an iconic place for winter sports and international jet setters. A place of world renown, nestled in an imposing mountain panorama. Even without skiing, you can enjoy it here. As well as experiencing art. One of James Turrell’s Skyspaces is located at an altitude of almost 2,000 meters, and the Pepper Collection’s Chalet Mimi also features a selection of modern and contemporary art curated by namesake and gallery owner Mimi Chun.

What could be more pleasant than residing in a ski resort between mountain ridges and snow in a luxurious ambience? The Pepper Collection dedicates its portfolio to exactly this desire. Embedded in the alpine landscape, you will find different hotel and accommodation concepts such as private charlets, centrally located hotel rooms or luxury apartments. Each house is unique.

Art concepts have become increasingly popular at hotels in recent years. The Chalet Mimi, managed by the Pepper Collection, also displays an exquisite selection of contemporary works by emerging and established artists. The art, which can be found throughout the chalet, was curated and selected by Hong Kong gallery owner Mimi Chun—who is also the namesake of the luxury accommodation.

In 2010, Mimi Chun founded Blindspot Gallery in Hong Kong. Initially focused on contemporary photography, the gallery program has now expanded to include a wide variety of diverse media in contemporaray art. At the time, the gallery was one of the first major galleries in the now buzzing Wong Chuk Hang district. Even more exciting to see how the art now works in a completely different setting. Chalet Mimi features photographic works as well as paintings and mixed media art. Many of the works show a strong local connection to Lech and the surrounding area, such as an acrylic and watercolor painting by Hong Kong artist Wong Wai Yin, which shows two skiers. Or a gelantine silver print of a winter landscape by the duo Rongrong & Inri. Other artists represented at Chalet Mimi include Etel Adnan, Candida Höfer and Lorna Simpson.

A glimpse into a very special accommodation of the Pepper Collection. Located directly in Lech, the Arla Luxury Home combines chalet architecture with modern interior design—with a guaranteed view of the imposing mountain Omeshorn.

The American Land-Art artist Turrell is particulary well-known for his space-light installations. These so-called Skyspaces can be found in the most diverse and often unusual places around the globe—large rooms in which viewers can sit down on seats. A circular opening in the ceiling provides a view of the sky. Turrell’s light tunnels and projections create forms that seem to have mass and weight, but are made only of light.
One of them can be found in the high mountains in Oberlech since 2014. Access to Skyspace Lech leads through a 15-meter tunnel into a structure that is largely underground, blending delicately into the landscape. A project, specially designed for the high mountain landscape, is equipped with a movable dome.

On the one side, this allows the artistic concept Skyspace, with the opening to the real sky. On the other side, it also allows, in closed condition, the use as a whole field space. Thus, the Skyspace Lech is one of the few light spaces in this series of works in which two very important artistic concepts of James Turrell can be experienced. A place where the viewer’s perception can be confused and distorted. The project was initiated by the association Horizon Field in cooperation with the gallery Häusler Contemporary.
