The PuLi Hotel & Spa describes itself as the first luxury hotel of its kind in China, which is spot on. The hotel opened in 2009 as an urban resort in what is undoubtedly Shanghai’s most central location, with a design that was definitely ahead of its time and is now considered timeless. It is a peaceful place with a tranquility that is rarely, if ever, found in the city. It’s like being far away from everything, yet still in the heart of the metropolis once you step outside..
From the moment you enter the lobby, you feel as if you’ve stepped into a serene oasis, a feeling enhanced by the high ceilings and expansive glass fronts offering views of the lush greenery outside. One of the lobby’s standout features is the Long Bar: Stretching 32 meters, this impressive table offers a refined selection of champagne and signature drinks, topped off with a unique view into the garden.
Built by Indonesian design firm Jaya & Associates and interior design studio Layan Design Group, the PuLi Hotel & Spa reveals itself as a tranquil and unique oasis. The overall concept, as well as the 193 rooms and 36 suites, are characterized by a simple yet distinctive design language.
Authentic touches of antique and historic Shanghainese references sit side by side with innovation and modern features. The lavish use of carved wooden screens, textured local gray brick walls, dark and grainy wood combined with light, polished sandstone and off-white textile wall coverings firmly anchor the hotel in Chinese culture.
The Michelin-starred restaurant Phénix is located on the second floor of the hotel. With a peaceful view overlooking Jing’an Park, it offers French cuisine with a special twist. The chef skillfully combines Chinese ingredients with modern French cuisine. The menu offers a wide selection of meat appetizers and innovative creations. The menu includes roasted Wenchang chicken, crispy frog legs, and oysters. Crème caramel, chocolate mousse with crispy speculoos biscuit, and cheesecake with pear and yuzu sauce are among the desserts on offer.
