When do you ever have the opportunity to stay in a typical Chinese hutong? The newly opened Mandarin Oriental Qianmen in Beijing now offers its guests exactly that. But what are hutongs? They are traditional residential areas in Beijing that typically consist of rectangular houses built around an inner courtyard. Places that formed the heart of urban life for centuries: for living, working and social interaction. And now also as a five star luxury hotel, where guests live side by side with local neighbors.
Mandarin Oriental Qianmen features a collection of 42 exclusive Siheyuan courtyard houses that are fully designed in the historic Qianmen style. The suites are characterized by the typical Mandarin Oriental luxury, paired with Chinese elements that are based on the unique atmosphere of the historic quarter. The rooms were restored carefully and the original architecture was preserved as much as possible.
Tiao is named after the Chinese words Shi Tiao 十条, meaning Alley Ten, as a reference to the bar’s original address. The two-storey bar offers relaxed seating both indoors and on the balcony to watch the hustle and bustle of the city. Its interior combines elements of early Western hotel architecture with the authenticity of Hutong culture. Special touches include handmade ceramic vessels for cocktails, reminiscent of traditional Chinese plum wine barrels, as well as nostalgic games such as cricket matches and throwing games inspired by the leisure activities of old Beijing. Innovative idea: a cocktail menu, which refers to the area. From Caochang Alley 3 to Alley 10, every drink offers a journey through nature, history, and contemporary culture, capturing the unique essence of the hutong.
Every brick from the original buildings was reused and integrated. Even the height of the courtyard building is based on the original schematics. Its interior design is equally unique, which is particularly noticeable when you enter the lobby. A mysterious yet calm atmosphere surrounds the large room, furnished with ebony and brass Ming dynasty style items.
The wellness amenities include a spa, a fitness center, a tea house, and the Qiyuan Healing Space, which enriches the experience with an emphasis on spiritual well-being. Guests can savour upscale Cantonese and Italian dishes, enjoy crafted cocktails in a hutong-inspired bar, or unwind over a tea in the serene Maple Lounge under century-old trees.
