My trip to Japan surely doesn’t end in Tokyo. I always wanted to visit the Japanese countryside, to see the nature and feel all the different sides of this country. So I took a train ride to Shizuoka, to be more precise, to Ito – a famous hot spring resort town on the eastern coast of the Izu Peninsula. In collaboration with the ABBA RESORTS IZU and SMALL LUXURY HOTELS OF THE WORLD I had the chance to stay at a traditional Japanese Inn, a Ryokan. Located in a small town, surrounded only by a serene forest, nature and the sea.

When Japanese interior design is meant to reflect the archipelago’s natural texture, this really comes into play at ABBA RESORTS. While I could already feel this combination during my accomodations in Tokyo, the harmonic interaction of nature and design became obvious during my stay at the countryside. The Resort opened over half a century ago, as a small guest house – today it has evolved into a spacious and also intimate retreat resort, where the traditional Japanese vibe is still dominant. The design of the ABBA RESORTS IZU (the ancient name is Zagyosoh, which means ‘sit back and enjoy’) is rich in Japanese culture. All rooms and villas are set among gardens. I stayed at one of the Villa Suites – a house with a very spacious deck, floor-to-ceiling glass doors, an open-air onsen bath and the best thing: a 27 square meter private swimming pool. Just for myself. The treetops were perfectly framing the pool’s edge, while the shore could be seen in the distance, complementing the scenery – a perfect escape after one week in Tokyo.

When guests arrive at the ABBA RESORTS, they are warmly welcomed at the main building, asked to have a seat and to enjoy the regional green tea, served in a traditional way. I was also lucky to enjoy some seasonal sweets, based on the fruit you can spot in this area – the Yamamomo. Once leaned back, I felt immediately overwhelmed by the silent and calm atmosphere. Clear lines are relaxing the mind while minimalistic and natural details such as wooden elements and anthrazit stones are mirroring the volcanic topography of the nearby Jogasaki Coast. As the Hotel is really offering all kind of luxury amenities and comfort, tradition plays a very important role and can be found in the traditional Kimonos of the staff as well as in the optional availability of Japanese food: If you ever want to experience traditional Japanese-style breakfast and dinner make sure to go to the on-site restaurant Sakura. I had both – the spectacular 12-course Kaiseki Meal and the traditional Japanese breakfast have been memorable of my stay.
