WRAPPED SUSTAINABLY

Single-use paper and other gift packaging has long been a significant problem around the holidays. The entire Christmas season has a tremendous environmental impact. MAISON RUINART creates an ecological awareness with its new Second Skin casing, which celebrates Christmas traditions without producing any kind of waste. The new enveloping design of the bottles has replaced the previous boxes and is now plastic-free and 100% recyclable. An aesthetic gift, not only to our loved ones, but also to our planet.

Sustainability plays a key role at Ruinart. The development of the Second Skin case is not an isolated initiative but part of Ruinart’s overall commitment to protecting the environment. Its wines draw their strength from three centuries of history. The balance between its roots and the boldness of its commitment is the key to its success and makes it a house that will always be contemporary. This also means thinking differently and sustainably.

In 2015, Ruinart launched an innovative box that was 50 grams lighter and at the same time saved 200 tons of paper. In the same year, all plastic wrapping has been removed from the boxes. A direction that has been followed with the new Second Skin case. Waste and recyclability were the top priorities during the conceptualization of the project: the new case design should have the least possible environmental impact.

Of course, the new sleeve does not change the unique taste of Ruinart champagnes. Even though the casing is almost ultra-thin, it is completely water resistant. In addition, it also protects the wines from light which is very important for optimal storage. A new way of presenting champagne, a new way of gifting.

“Innovative, authentic and environmentally-conscious, the second skin case crystallizes our commitment to sustainability”

― Frédéric Dufour, President of Maison Ruinart

The Second Skin case is nine times lighter than the original box and reduces the carbon footprint by 60% in comparison to the current generation of Ruinart boxes. Of course, the unique design also draws a lot of attention. It’s a cover that elegantly encloses the bottle. Like a second skin of paper, the new case wraps itself around the emblematic curves of the bottle. Visually, the Second Skin packaging is inspired by the Crayères – the raw texture and shape reflects the surface of the chalk- pit cellars of the Maison in Reims Crayères, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
